Treasurer Stacy Garrity Encourages Nonprofit Organizations to Search for Unclaimed Property on National Nonprofit Day
Returning unclaimed property to nonprofits helps organizations fulfill their missions
Harrisburg, PA - In anticipation of National Nonprofit Day on Saturday, August 17, Treasurer Stacy Garrity, United Way of Pennsylvania, and the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) are encouraging nonprofit organizations to search for unclaimed property that rightfully belongs to them. Pennsylvania nonprofits can search by visiting patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property.
“Pennsylvania’s great nonprofit organizations make an incredible positive impact on our communities every day. I’m focused on returning unclaimed property to nonprofits because it helps them better serve Pennsylvanians in need. I encourage every nonprofit to search our website today to see if any money is available for them.”
Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity
Treasury regularly returns unclaimed property to nonprofits across the state, including more than $160,000 returned to the United Way of Pennsylvania earlier this year.
“Nonprofits need to know that Pennsylvania’s unclaimed property search-and-claim process is attainable regardless of the size of your organization. Searching for unclaimed property is easy, and only takes a few minutes. Filing a claim requires a minimal amount of paperwork to verify that your nonprofit is the rightful owner of the property. And the Pennsylvania Treasury team is there to help you every step of the way.”
Kristen Rotz, President of United Way of Pennsylvania
“Every dollar returned to a nonprofit is a dollar that can support the essential work they perform in our communities. We want to ensure that no organization misses the opportunity to leverage the valuable resources of state unclaimed property programs.”
NAUPA President Carmen Pigler, who also serves as Treasurer of the District of Columbia
Treasury is currently working to return more than $4.5 billion worth of unclaimed property, and the average value of a claim is about $1,600.
Many nonprofit organizations may be unaware that they have unclaimed property, which can include things like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, rebate payments, insurance policies, stocks, bonds and more. Treasurer Garrity emphasized that it’s important to search for unclaimed property regularly, as new information is added to Treasury’s database throughout the year.
