Memorial Day
Message
As we gather together with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, let us not forget the reason behind this national holiday. Our armed forces put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms we hold dear – they deserve our thanks and they deserve our constant support, in the warzone and on the home front. Learn more...

Happy Veterans Day

This week, tens of millions of Americans went to the polls to cast their vote – a right that is among our most precious freedoms. As we approach Veterans Day on Sunday, we should pause to remember and acknowledge the role of service members who have made these freedoms possible and who continue to preserve them to this day. $540,000 in unclaimed property for PA schools and school districts!
This morning, I returned $12,392 in unclaimed property to the Pittsburgh Public Schools during a visit to the district’s creative and performing arts school. While there, I also encouraged 33 other districts in Allegheny County to claim more than $89,000 that is owed to them.  Learn more...

Last week, the federal government and 49 state attorneys general announced the nation’s five largest mortgage providers – Ally Financial, Bank of America, Citigroup, JP Morgan, and Wells Fargo – will pay a sizeable settlement for irresponsible and fraudulent practices that wrongly forced countless families from their homes (despite the fact these mortgage servicers lacked the proper documentation to validate those decisions). Pennsylvania and affected consumers in our state are expected to receive a reported $266 million from the settlement. Learn more...

Special Keystone HELP rates for flood victims

Flooding from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee affected families throughout Pennsylvania. Early reports are that more than 4,500 homes were destroyed or damaged. Those families are now rebuilding their homes and their lives. Affected homeowners should first see what help is available under their insurance policies or through state and federal disaster assistance programs. The president’s disaster declaration will make a great deal of aid available to Pennsylvania.  Flood victims who do not have personal coverage or qualify for federal assistance may, however, face significant replacement expenses for damaged hot water heaters, furnaces, insulation, windows or doors. Help to avoid foreclosure

For too many Pennsylvania families, the threat of losing their home in these tough times is an all-too-real possibility. Families facing foreclosure should know that help is available, but the deadline to apply is approaching quickly. The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) administers the federal Emergency Homeowners' Loan Program, created specifically to assist homeowners facing the loss of their homes.  Homeowners seeking a loan must apply through a PHFA-approved counseling agency as soon as possible.  Agencies must deliver qualifying applications to PHFA no later than September 16, 2011. As a former business owner, I know it can be frustrating when you aren’t well-briefed about the laws that apply to your business. Treasury Innovations Improve Pennsylvanians’ Economic Security
Pennsylvania is a great place for business and business leaders – I boasted about that to viewers of CNBC’s Squawk Box program on September 17. The Commonwealth continues to be a great investment, a great low-cost and low-tax state, and a world-class location.

Our work at the McCord Treasury is focused on creating economic growth and increased economic security however possible. Today, I get to share some of my colleagues’ recent – and award-winning – accomplishments. Using innovation and increased transparency, our team designed new approaches that have saved money and increased efficiency. Learn more...

Save a lot, save a little, save something for retirement
I spend much of my time worrying about how to invest a lot of money – over $80 billion dollars per year. Yet I know the challenges of investing money pale in comparison to the stress of not having ENOUGH money for retirement. And I want to help Pennsylvanians avoid the frightening prospect of sliding into financial peril after they retire and stop getting a paycheck. Learn more...

Giving back and moving forward

On Monday we will commemorate a powerful figure in American history – a man whose indomitable belief in the power and goodness of the human spirit set our nation on a path towards greater equality and freedom for all.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that by working together, we could achieve common goals, solve social problems, and, ultimately, strengthen our nation and our communities.
