Treasurer McCord to PA Seniors: Claim What’s Yours
Call or visit Treasury’s Web site to find any unclaimed property that might be waiting for you
HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Treasurer Rob McCord wants you to know that one out of 10 Pennsylvanians have unclaimed property, and the average claimant age is over 55.
“Older Pennsylvanians are more likely to have unclaimed property. They’ve worked longer and at more jobs, they often have more complicated financial histories – and they’ve had more opportunities to leave property behind,” said Treasurer McCord. “If you have unclaimed property, Treasury’s Return Team stands ready to help you put it back where it belongs – in your wallet!”
“You don’t know what you might have out there – the average unclaimed property claim is approximately $1200,” Treasurer McCord continued. “Searching for unclaimed property is an easy financial housekeeping task that can potentially enhance your economic security.”
Generally speaking, unclaimed property is any financial asset that has been left with a business or organization without activity or contact for at least one year, including: bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, accounts payable or receivable checks, credit balances, expired gift cards, savings and checking accounts, escrow accounts, money orders, travelers checks, utility refunds, insurance proceeds, stocks and bonds, and the contents of safe deposit boxes.
Treasurer McCord warned older Pennsylvanians about individuals who seek to profit from unclaimed property claims. “Before you sign an agreement with a ‘finder,’ or pay a fee, call Treasury – we never charge you a fee to help you claim what’s yours!”
The McCord Treasury's Return Team is working hard to locate the rightful owners of nearly $2 billion in unclaimed property. Last fiscal year, Treasury returned over $98.2 million to the rightful owners or heirs. Visit www.patreasury.gov or call 1-800-222-2046 to search for unclaimed property.
Pennsylvania Treasurer Rob McCord is committed to increasing the economic security and prosperity of all Pennsylvanians. Before winning the statewide elected job of State Treasurer, McCord was a successful business leader. He is now focused on strengthening the state’s economy, managing investments to get strong returns for taxpayers, and helping to create good jobs and retirement security for Pennsylvanians.
